It began with a trip to Beijing – and an interest in the people and the business behind the products.

A trip that stayed with me
Around 25 years ago, I made my first trip to Beijing with my MBA class. It was a study visit, but it also became the start of an interest that has stayed with me ever since. The people we met, the country's history and its culture made a strong impression on me.
We visited the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace. Those places gave me perspective on the country. At least as important were the meetings with representatives of China's Ministry of Commerce and with business owners. That is where my curiosity was sparked about how business and relationships could be built between our markets.
Meetings at the fair and on the factory floor
Over the years I have returned to China many times. I have visited the Canton Fair in Guangzhou on several occasions and travelled to Shanghai, Shenzhen, Ningbo, Xiamen and Hong Kong. I estimate that it has amounted to around a hundred factory visits over the years.
It is in personal meetings that I have gained a better understanding of manufacturers: how they work, what they can offer and what needs to be discussed before a partnership takes shape. For me, dialogue and an understanding of each other's circumstances are an important part of a long-term supplier relationship.

Experience put to good use
My employment background includes IKEA and Tallink Silja, among others. From there I bring experience of commercial work, negotiation and supplier relationships. Together with the trips and meetings in Asia, that is the experience I want to put to use through Asia Sourcing.
I want to make it easier for Nordic companies to find the right manufacturers, compare purchasing terms and build long-term business. My experience is primarily in China, but other Asian markets are also relevant. The starting point is the company's needs – not that a particular country should always be the answer.
For me, sourcing is not just about buying cheaper. It is about creating better business, building relationships and discovering new opportunities.
